Yin Yang Ching

THE I CHING is an ancient Chinese divination process. To use it, you first think of a question to which you need the answer. You then throw a bunch of yarrow stalks (or if yarrow isn’t available on Amazon, toss a coin) to produce one of two results. These may produce a broken line (Yin) or an unbroken line (Yang).

When you have six lines, forming a hexagram, you can look it up in the Book of Changes. This will give you a nugget of wisdom, usually a short but pithy sentence dispensing a potted aphorism.

It’s bollocks, of course, but useful bollocks nonetheless. The power of the I Ching isn’t in the predictions themselves, which are purposely opaque, but in the way in which you interpret them to fit your situation. Anything that makes you view your predicament from a different angle is useful advice.
