What’s a colour?

A CHILD RECENTLY asked me what my favourite colour was. I replied “black”. She rolled her eyes, and gave me that look children reserve for particularly stupid adults. “Black isn’t a colour,” she declared.

So what is it, then? If I go to Homebase and ask for a tin of paint, and the operator asks what colour I want, should I say “No colour at all”? In which case, I’ll probably be given white.

For some reason, kids are often taught that black and white aren’t colours because they don’t appear in the rainbow. But then neither does brown. Or gold, or silver, or copper.

Teachers should really stop lying to kids.
