THE WORST WAY TO TAKE A SELFIE is, of course, to hold your phone at arm’s length and point it at yourself. You’ll see your friends in the distance looking happy and smiling, with a close-up of yourself in the foreground squinting at the lens and wondering if it’s going to work.
The best way is to put your phone on a stand (I have a rather fabulous magnetic folding stand that I keep in my pocket, so I can always rest my phone on a nearby surface). If you have an Apple Watch, you can use it as a remote trigger – it rather cleverly has a three second timer, so you end up with all your selfies showing you grasping your wrist.
If you don’t have an Apple Watch, then use the timer on your phone. Remember to give yourself enough time to get in place, and make sure the other people in the picture have left a space for you to run into.
If you’re using a real camera, as opposed to your phone, then it will probably give you the option of taking three photographs rather than one. This will almost always produce the best results: after the first image has been captured the group will start to break out of their formal pose, and that’s when you’ll capture the best images.
