ON 23 MARCH 1530 Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, gave the island of Malta to the Knights Hospitalier.
They were gifted the island on a perpetual lease, for which they had to pay an annual tribute of a single Maltese falcon. Humphrey Bogart fans will appreciate this reference.
