Me, me, me

IT’S COMMONLY HELD among the middle classes that to begin a sentence with ‘Me’ is a sign of a poor education. ‘Me and my mate went to the movies’ is a sure way of showing your grammatical ignorance. ‘My mate and me went to the movies’ is barely any better, although it does have the advantage of putting your mate first.

But it’s taken too far when people avoid saying ‘me’ at all. ‘Just between you and I’, some will say, or ‘It’s a decision for you and I to make’.

It’s grammatically wrong. You wouldn’t say ‘It’s a decision for I to make’, so nor should you say ‘It’s a decision for you and I to make’. In these cases the first person is the object, not the subject.

Trying to speak grammatically shouldn’t make you fall into the trap of assuming that it’s wrong to use the word ‘me’ at all.
