AT SOME POINT you’ll find yourself in charge of a boat. It may be a rowing boat on a river, or something larger like a cruiser on the Norfolk Broads. There you are, sailing merrily along, and you see an enticing stretch of bank where you want to pull up. But how do you stop your boat from floating away?
There are hundreds of sailors’ knots to learn, but this is the most effective and simple way of tying your boat to a post or (strong) stake.
First, make a loop and put it over the post, with the loose end underneath. Then make another loop, exactly the same way – with the loose end underneath – and place that over the top.
The result is a secure knot that will hold your boat firmly, but which is easy to undo.
