How to start a fire

YOU’RE ON A CAMPING TRIP (that’s you, not me, I hate camping) and you want to cook up some baked beans (why is it always beans?). So you reach for your matches, or your lighter, and you realise you’ve left them both at home.

There’s a simple solution. Gather some dry twigs, place them in a pile, and add some dried leaves on top. Now find yourself a couple of sticks – one stiff, one with some flexibility.

Tie a string (you did bring some string, right?) to both ends of the bendy stick, bending it so it forms a bow. Wrap the string around the stiff stick, and hold the top end with a suitable rock.

As you move the bow back and forth, it will spin the stick faster than you could do it by hand, and with any luck the friction will set light to the dried leaves.
