Don’t be afrit

WHAT’S THE POINT of those black dots around the edge of your car windscreen? Every car has them. And they’re called ‘frit’.

The windscreen is fixed in place by a sealant, which also keeps the rain out. The black frit paint is rougher than the glass, so it makes a more secure bond between the windscreen and the car. It’s black, so it stops ultraviolet rays from the sun from weakening the sealant.

But because it’s black, it heats up more quickly than the glass during the manufacturing process. This could cause undue stress on the glass, so to avoid it they make it fade away in a dot pattern which becomes increasingly sparse away from the edges.
